Images and Emerging Photographers
Our January program will highlight the work of two VCU MFA students who already have extensive portfolios and accomplished exhibitions. Jessica Miller and Jon-Phillip Sheridan will share their images, perspectives, and take us on their creative journey.
Jessica Miller began taking pictures at a young age, and has always been fascinated with narrative images. She holds a BFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute, as well as a BA in Psychology and Photography from Randolph-Macon Woman's College. In addition to working for her clients, Jessica works incessantly on projects of her own creation, shooting everywhere from India to Berlin to the backwoods of the American South. She is currently pursuing an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she is also an instructor in the Photography and Film Department. Please visit her website,
http://www.jessica-miller.com for examples of her work
Jon-Phillip Sheridan was born in 1977 in Charlottesville, Virginia and grew up on a family-run farm and campground. Sheridan received his BFA in photography from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in 2000 and is currently enrolled at VCU pursuing his MFA in Photography and Film. Jon-Phillip has had solo exhibitions at the Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA and the 1708 Gallery in Richmond. His work is included in the collections of Capital One and the Federal Reserve Bank.
Jon-Phillip has also been included in many group exhibitions including the prestigious Washington Project for the Arts "Art Auction" and Look3, Festival of the Photograph "Shots" series curated by Melissa Harris (editor of Aperture magazine), Kathy Ryan (picture editor for the New York Times Magazine), and David Griffin (director of photography for National Geographic). Most recently he won an award in Blurb's international self publishing book competition for his project "Of Cats and Fish".
